National Password Day – Is Your Digital Life Secure?

National Password Day

Cyber security is more important than ever. In June 2016, a company called TeleSign conducted a report about looking beyond passwords for accounts protected by them. They asserted that most companies don’t believe that passwords don’t provide enough account security. In fact, it takes .29 seconds for Hackers to crack a 7-letter password, and for 73% of online accounts are guarded by duplicate passwords.

May 4th is World Password Day. It is a day where hundreds of global organizations take a pledge on social media to improve their password habits. It’s easy. Take steps to make a safer digital Life. Create strong passwords for each of your accounts. Get a password manager and turn on multifactor authentication.

When you create strong passwords, the key is length. Passwords should be at least 8 characters long and hard to guess. Never use personal information, especially if it is easy to guess from posts on social media or by searching your name online. Always use a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. It is a lot to remember, but Pass Phrases make them easier to remember. Pass phrases like “Apr1lSh0w3rs” make strong passwords.

Beyond a strong password, having a different one for each account is important. Cyber criminals know people reuse passwords. It is the easiest way to remember the complex string of characters. But if you imagine that your car key could open your front door, and your bank account, and wall safe. A thief would have access to everything. Just the same, when someone hacks Netflix and finds your password that you use for everything else, then your email and your bank could be at stake. Use a different password for every online account. This way if one account is compromised, you can rest assured, your other accounts are still safe.

Of course, With every new account, the more difficult it is to remember. Here is where password managers come in. Password Managers stores all of your passwords and remembers the so you don’t have to. They may also help in generating passwords, making them easy to use. And you only have one password to remember as your master key. As a backup for your master key, good password managers make it so it only works on your registered devices. This way if someone tries to log in from an unregistered device, they will be blocked, and further steps are taken. Meanwhile, you will be notified of the breach.

These managers also let you add fingerprint and face recognition options on trusted devices. This is Multi-Factor Authentication. If you use your computer to log in, there will usually be a follow up text to your phone to authenticate that it is you who has tried to log into the account. This gives your accounts an extra layer of protection against hacking. Last year, 450 million leaked passwords. This protective layer significantly reduces the chances of a security breach.

The wave of the future, is that most companies will no longer use passwords. Until then, take steps to protect your digital life.
